Welcome.
On behalf of the organising committee, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the participants of the 2010 Cong – Galway Race. Steeped in tradition, this is Ireland’s longest inland waterway race and your participation will ensure that its tradition, excitement and enjoyment will endure. This year we celebrate the 128 anniversary of the Race.

A huge number of Corrib Rowing & Yachting Club Members have willingly given of their skills and service to make this event happen- safety personnel, safety boats, cruisers, time keepers and catering corp etc. Far too many people to mention by name, but we are very grateful for their contribution. Sponsors have given generously and without their continued support, this event would have been lost to history.

We do hope that everyone will have a safe and enjoyable experience and we look forward to welcoming you back here again next year.

Prof. Peter Smith
President, Corrib Rowing & Yachting Club.

History of the Cong – Galway Race This race traces its history back to 1882 when the first Annual Race from the Royal Galway Yachting Club premises at the Fisheries Field in Galway (opposite Galway Cathedral) to Ashford Castle (Cong) and back, was inaugurated, a distance of 61.5 nautical miles. This year is the 128 Anniversary.

The race started early and the participants were entertained to lunch in Cong. They also stopped at Killbeg on the way home. This was a major social and sailing event in Galway until 1914. It never recovered after the First World War and was last held in its old format in 1931.

As part of the general renaissance of sailing in Galway, this Race was revived in its present format in 1972 and has been raced annually ever since.
